NLC Detroit to Honor Leaders Making Positive Change in Detroit Area

 DETROIT, MICHIGAN – The Detroit Chartering Chapter of Washington-based New Leaders Council (NLC) is hosting a special evening of networking, recognition, and celebration of Detroit’s top progressive leaders on Friday, June 15. This event will be the graduation of the 2018 Fellows Cohort and the special honoring of four (4) exemplary Detroit leaders committed to democracy, social justice, and equal opportunity.

The celebratory affair will include a “Ted Talk”, entitled “DETalk”, and an awards ceremony to commemorate progressive leaders making  impactful change in the in civic, corporate, government, and non-profit sectors.

​The 2018 Honorees are:
  • Civic Sector: Garlin Gilchrist II, Founding Executive Director of Center for Social Media Responsibility
  • Private Sector: Kirsten Ussery & Erika Boyd, Founders of Vegan Soul
  • Government Sector: Amber Lewis, Digital and Social Media Manager for the Mayor's Office, City of Detroit
  • Non-Profit: Devita Davidson, Executive Director of FoodLab Detroit​
This year’s graduating NLC Fellows are Detroit’s top 20 emerging leaders who successfully completed the 2018 NLC Institute, reckoned as the nation’s premiere political entrepreneurship training program. The 6-month development program, which began in January 2018, equips leaders with the skills to run for office, manage campaigns, and create start-ups. With over 6,000 alumni since 2013, New Leaders Council is quickly creating an exciting network of individuals highly-skilled in working together across sectors to improve the progressive infrastructure and equal opportunity. Its mission is to train over 10,000 leaders by 2020.
