DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JULY 3, 2015 -On July 23-25, the New Leaders Council (NLC) will be hosting its annual NLC National Leadership Retreat in Washington, D.C., where more than 250 leaders from over 25 states will gather to share their strategies for the coming year and help reinforce NLC progress.
This stellar conference plays an important role in making sure that NLC continues to build the progressive bench and local, state, and national progressive infrastructure. It will also bring together NLC Leadership, Alumni, and Fellows from its nationwide chapters along with members of the general progressive community, for panels highlighting the accomplishments of progressives in the economy, technology, entrepreneurship, and government.

A special delegation from the New Leaders Council Detroit will be traveling to Washington for this remarkable occasion. This year, the work of 2015 NLC Detroit Fellows Axel Cooley, Lawrence Robinson, and Jay Rayford, has been selected to represent the City of Detroit. A special presentation will be made on July 23rd at the U.S. Capitol Building highlighting the “DETROIT DE3” Program that these solid leaders implemented to Expose, Empower, and Engage inner city youth.

Their 5-week training workshop rolled out its pilot program in Southwest Detroit’s Western High School located at 1500 Scotten St., where 10th Grade students were motivated by understanding tools, information, and pathways of success. In fact, extraordinary working professionals were brought in to share their personal stories with the students on how they overcame adversity to reach life goals. The pilot program culminated by taking the scholars on a tour through the City of Detroit to expose them to the history of the city and the exceptional development taking place in their community. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the dynamic trio - Axel, Lawrence and Jay - DETROIT DE3 is now scheduled to roll out in 10 Detroit Public Schools in the Fall. Their work is an excellent example of what progressive leaders are doing to rebuild the community.

The NLC annual retreat is set to kick off on Thursday, July 23rd with NLC’s first ever ‘NLC on the Hill’ day, immediately followed by a welcome reception at The Rayburn House Office Building beginning at 5:30 p.m. Policy discussions will start on Friday, July 24th, including an exclusive policy discussion at The White House that afternoon. Saturday will consist of important discussions that will chart the course for NLC for this Fall and the Spring Institute of 2016.
